Sicamous Canada

Where the water holds the stories

There are some places in Canada that whisper to you. Sicamous is one of them.

Tucked between Shuswap Lake and Mara Lake, this small town sits in the crossroads of two beautiful bodies of water. It is the heart of where houseboats drift in the sun, adventurers explore, and mornings consist of mist rather than noise.

From the shore alone, you can tell the water here carries memories. Locals joke that everyone comes for a weekend and ends up staying for a lifetime, and after one sunset over the channel, you start to see how it happens.

Sicamous has a rhythm: excitement in one moment, a stillness you didn’t know you needed in the next.

What Feels Different Right Away

The pace. No honking. No rushing. The scenery speaks for itself, and everyone seems happy to let it finish the sentence.

Step onto any marina and you will see one of Canada’s most unique subcultures, houseboating. Whether leaving with family or friends, each group has a bubble of excitement and no plans other than to relax and enjoy the company and nature surrounding them.

Summer rules here, but winter has the locals’ hearts. In Sicamous, nature isn’t the backdrop, it’s the local personality trait. Anyone you talk to will mention how they wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, except in the mountains that surround the area. Once temperatures drop, locals crave snow packed trails and all winter activities from sled trails to exploring valleys.

Houseboating

Sicamous is the houseboating capital of Canada, a unique experience for everyone. Families and friends are able to spend a couple of days on the water, taking advantage of the included hot tub, waterslide, kitchen, beds, and fireplace. I went on a houseboat with Twin Anchors, and it did not disappoint. As soon as we untied the ropes, I immediately felt at ease. Whether you’re dreaming of quiet days on the water or loud nights with family or friends, this one’s unforgettable.

Apline Snowmobiling

Believe it or not, Sicamous has some of the best alpine snowmobiling in Western Canada. This activity is for those looking for an adventure and an amazing time. The local guides know hundreds of different paths and routes, each one leaving you in awe of the nature and snow-packed hills around you.

Dutchmen Dairy

Whether you are driving through or staying for the week, Dutchmen Dairy is a must-see. Off the highway is a small world of fresh milk, 62 flavours of ice cream, cheese curds, and other local products. The main attraction of the dairy is the animals on site for visitors to see and even pet if they are lucky. Off to the left of the building is a small barn with adorable dairy cows and goats. If you are 7 or 70, you are sure to love this stop.

Fruit World

British Columbia is known to have some of the best fruit and vegetables in Canada. Fruit World lives up to this, selling some of the best snap peas and peaches I’ve ever had. Local products are also sold at the market, making it the one-stop shop in Shuswap country.

Where to Eat

Old Town Bay Marina Pub – Dishes that Feel Intentional

I tried almost all of the restaurants in Sicamous, and this was by far my favourite. Food aside, the pub owners instantly made my trip worth it with their welcoming energy and passion for the food they serve. Each dish is created with thought, incorporating new flavours and unique takes on the dish. They often have daily specials, making me want to come back again and again. To top it all off, you get to dine on their spacious patio overlooking the lake.

Moose Mulligans – A Marina Classic

Located right on the water, Moose Mulligans is iconic to Sicamous. Whether driving in or using the attached marina, this restaurant is a classic in the city, serving great food and drinks. The patio fills up quickly in the summer, bringing energy and excitement.

The Mara Hills Restaurant – Views You’ll Never Want to Leave

This is by far the best view you can get for dining in and around Sicamous. Located on a gorgeous golf course, the restaurant’s patio overlooks Mara Lake, leaving me speechless and stunned while dining. If coming by boat, the restaurant offers an included golf cart ride up to the top of the hill. You simply need to call when you arrive, and a member of their team will come down to greet your party.

If You Want a Little Extra

Rent a Boat

If you are staying in Sicamous for a couple days, I highly recommend renting jet skis or a boat to enjoy the lake and sunshine. Bulldog Boat Rental was highly professional and located outside the channel, allowing you to avoid the chaos of summer boat traffic. If you rent from them, make your way to Shark Shack, a floating restaurant and bar in the middle of the lake. This is truly one of the most unique bars I have been to and a must-see in the area.

The Shuswap Northern Rail Trail

There are many amazing hikes in the area, but I highly recommend going on the new Shuswap Northern Rail Trail. The path runs along the lake, giving you great views while you walk, run, or bike. Starting in Sicamous, the rail trail will take you all the way to Armstrong, with plans to connect with Vernon and Kelowna’s rail trail in the future. This is the perfect way to stay active in the summer and see the towns and landscape around you.

Sicamous very quickly became one of my favourite corners of British Columbia. It’s rare to find a place that resets you without trying. The community and people are welcoming and warm, making you feel at home immediately. Every day makes you feel rejuvenated, regardless if you are lying in the sun, sledding in the snow, or toasting on a boat. After leaving this town, you will be craving to go back.
